Google reviews do two things for a trade business: they push you up the Google Maps rankings, and they convert browsers into bookings. A plumber with 80 reviews at 4.9 stars will out-earn an identical plumber with 12 reviews — every time.
Here's the exact system we set up for our clients.
Why Google Reviews Matter More Than Any Other Review Platform
Trustpilot, Checkatrade and Facebook reviews are nice to have. Google reviews are what Google uses to rank you. They're the only ones that directly grow your visibility AND your conversion.
Get Your Direct Review Link
Open your Google Business Profile dashboard → 'Get more reviews' → copy the short link (g.page/r/...). This is the link you'll send to every customer.
The 'Same-Day Text' Method
Send the review request within 2 hours of finishing the job, while you're fresh in the customer's mind. A simple WhatsApp or SMS works better than email.
The Message That Actually Gets Replies
'Hi [name], thanks for choosing us today. Reviews on Google really help small trade businesses like ours — if you've got 30 seconds, here's a direct link: [link]. Thanks so much, [your name].'
Personal, short, no incentive. This pattern gets 30–50% response rates on average.
What to Do With a 1- or 2-Star Review
Reply professionally and publicly within 24 hours. Acknowledge, apologise where appropriate, and offer to resolve offline. A handled negative review actually builds more trust than 50 perfect ones.
Never Do These Things
Don't offer discounts or freebies for reviews — Google bans this. Don't use review-gating apps that filter out negative feedback. Don't fake reviews. All three can get your profile suspended.
